This Hamburg-style harpsichord after Zell was built as a display instrument in 2017. It has been shown at various keyboard society meetings and exhibitions, and audience members have remarked on its full, rich sound. For the last few years it has been on loan to Newton Baroque, a professional early music group in the Boston area, led by keyboardist Andrus Madsen. Several videos of performances that used this instrument in ensemble settings can be found by searching on YouTube. Two recommended videos with suggested search terms are as follows: 1. Newton Baroque Biber Partie V 2. Newton Baroque Marcello Cantata The instrument is scheduled to return to my shop in September, and it will then undergo ordinary revoicing and maintenance to bring it to top playing condition. A new stand after historical examples will also be made. Additionally, the job of repainting the case exterior to a darker green color will be completed, along with any other decorative work needed. Gilding was never added to the inner lid or outer case, but it could be supplied as desired by the buyer, with an appropriate extra charge for the cost of the gold. Alternatively, darker edge bands could be painted around the rectangular panels and the lid, as is often seen in the Hamburg instruments. For further information about Zell and this design, please see the description given under the German Harpsichords page. |
